INFLUENCE OF ENGLISH ON THE LEXICAL AND SEMANTIC SYSTEMS OF ITALIAN AMONG ADVANCED PUPILS IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN SERBIA

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to examine the extent to which the knowledge of English as the first foreign language helps advanced pupils notice similarities and differences in terms of language systems of English and Italian in the context of formal education in Serbia. In addition to the theoretical framework, the paper presents the results of research which, along with a critical analysis of the forms of interlanguage characteristic of primary school age, includes and defines the extent to which pupils at this age are able to distinguish the production of typologically similar word forms of Italian as the second foreign language. The major objective of the paper is to define the extent to which advanced pupils are able to use their own metalinguistic strategies when acquiring a new foreign language. The results of the analysis of cloze tests have showen that, despite the small number of errors, the type of interlanguage forms indicates that students at this level of English and Italian language proficiency are not fully able to distinguish between these two language systems.
