Abstract
This paper takes into consideration the basic theoretical concepts of functional primary education of adults as one of the biggest innovations in the educational system of teaching adults in the last twenty years. The paper also puts forth the features of this type of education, with particular emphasis on the context of teaching the Serbian language. Finally, the paper considers the goals and aims of teaching Serbian in the functional primary education of adults, and proposes a model of interpretation of a chosen teaching unit from literature.
