Abstract

In this paper we study the issues concerning the preparation and planning of lessons for online English classes. We use a survey to gather responses from our respondents (N=53), who are online instructors of the English language working for various international language schools, concerning the choices of teaching methods, materials and approaches. The instructors adapt the structure and flow of the teaching process to the recipients, who are students from China, by carefully planning the lessons for the purpose of achieving specific objectives. In their line of work, they face many challenges. By employing qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis, we come to the conclusion that the parents of the students, who are predominantly minors, are present during classes, which the majority of instructors find to be a positive influence. In their teaching they mostly use already prepared materials that are available on the platform. They utilize Communicative Language Teaching and Total Physical Response as default teaching methods. A certain degree of dissatisfaction arises from the working conditions of freelancers, low salaries, overly high degree of parents’ influence and sporadic lack of discipline on the students’ side.
