Abstract

In the modern educational system the acquisition of knowledge has been relegated in favour of skills, which gain ever more in importance. Considering the velocity of the changing of the society, the knowledge grows, becomes obsolete and gets replaced at such a rate, that it has become far more important to know how than what. The priority is having been given to the practical knowledge over the theory, since the accumulation of the unusable theoretical knowledge has been proved to be nonsensical. This pragmatic tendency affects in the first place the social sciences and humanities, which have primarily been oriented to acquisition of the knowledge of human society and human beings, so that they get ever more marginalized. However, a number of competences listed as
comprehensive or even as key competences essential for success at studies and work in every area of the modern society, can be acquired foremost in the domain of the social sciences and humanities, which provides a competitive entrance ticket to the labour market for the students of this scientific field. In this paper there has been offered a list of the key competences to be acquired during the studies of the social sciences and humanities, the effective way to achieve them and the various possibilities of application of those competences at university and later on at work.
