Abstract

The paper investigates common phonetic and phonological errors in written production made by first-year students of Modern Greek studies at the Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade. These students come into contact with the Modern Greek language for the first time and tend to reach the A1 level (CEFR) during the first semester of undergraduate studies. More specifically, errors noticed in writing personal names and toponyms transferred from Serbian to the Modern Greek language are examined. The paper contains empirical research, after which phonetic and phonological errors in writing are presented and analyzed. Additionally, the paper presents the issues of the use of graphemes of the native language and the replacement of graphemes from the Greek alphabet, while the phenomenon of hypercorrection is especially examined. The results of the research are interpreted in accordance with related studies while providing suggestions for future research and didactic implications.
